Complexities of Deploying Commercial Solar
There are a number of complexities associated with successfully engineering, financing and deploying a cost-effective commercial solar solution:
Location & Environmental
Location and environmental factors including determining the Array Production Hours (APH) for the on-site location as well as the potential Output Loss Rate (OLR) for panels. These factors vary significantly from one region to another.
Capital Expenditure
Total capital expenditure costs including solar panels, the inverter and mounting equipment for an array are significant. Procured equipment needs to be correctly assembling and positioned for the array to operate most efficiently.
Utility Tariff Structure
Working with the local utility to optimize the tariff structure to integrate effectively with the solar plant. Seasonality and power demand volatility add complexity to this analysis.
Government & Other Incentives
There is an increasingly complex incentive environment. Solar owners need to calculate and monitor the various incentives available including Federal Investment Tax Credits (FITC), Performance Based Incentives (PBI) and Renewable Energy Credits (RECs).
Financing and Regulation
Project financing for commercial solar is a relatively immature market and requires significant preparation of materials, financial models, permits and local filings, to meet bank and local government requirements.
